the WORKSHOP : our history
About the building...
The Workshop is Folkestone's radical new business hub and a growing, ever-changing home of exciting businesses and the propagator of fledgling talent.
Located in the old part of the town, just metres away from the English Channel, The Workshop's home on Tontine Street has a rich history of commerce and creativity and is at the heart of Folkestone's Creative Quarter.
Once the most prosperous street in Folkestone, Tontine Street was created over 150 years ago thanks to a £50,000 fund raised by gamblers, who were offered Parliamentary votes and an annual income on their investments as well as the chance of a fortune.
Each received a yearly return, which grew larger as members of the group died – leaving just one shareholder who eventually got the lot.
This type of scheme, called a Tontine, was created by Lorenzo Tonti, a Neapolitan banker, in 1650 and is the origin behind the street's distinctive name.
The Workshop building has over the years housed a diverse range of businesses from a thriving butcher to a popular nightclub, but today the five-story space plays host to a buzzing pool of talent.
A hive of activity and creativity with a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to growth - The Workshop really has only just begun. It offers the latest in office design and technology whilst providing flexible work space and meeting rooms in an area surrounded by art galleries, restaurants, theatres, and of course, the beach.
Folkestone's new digital hub - offering state of the art office facilities.
